Approximately 200 people from the tourism industry along with the Minister of Development José Luis Ábalos, Andalusian President Juanma Moreno and other regional as well as local politicians attended last Wednesday the celebrations of Málaga airport´s 100th anniversary this year.

The airport, which has had 400 million travelers since it opened, celebrates 100 years. On September 2nd, 1919, the first regular airline line started from the airfield whose name was El Rompedizo. The French airline Lignes Latécoère began operating the Toulouse-Barcelona-Alicante-Málaga and Casablanca route.

This year, Málaga Airport is expected to reach 20 million travelers and to 150 destinations around the world.

Innovation and sustainability are key words when Málaga Airport is aiming for the future. Previously, it was the size that mattered, but in the future, it is more about technical solutions, safe and sustainable travel experiences. The development will continue, and the airport will undergo a major digital transformation with complex intelligent platforms.

Reducing pollution and improving efficiency so that Malaga Airport is a reference in the aviation industry is also in the agenda for the future. In order to succeed, political stability and cooperation is required, according to The Spanish Development Minister José Luis Ábalos on Wednesday.

The airport has invested 1.7 billion EUR recently, this is an economic engine with 8,000 jobs and 200 companies.
